Gregory Alan Isakov - The Weatherman

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place.
Music has been a stabilizing and constant force. “I’ve always had this sense about music and writing that I sort of have to do it. Like I’ll implode without it. I probably wouldn’t do it if I felt any other way.”
His song-craft lends to the deepest lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. He has been described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius,” but the source of his writing often remains a mystery to him. “My songs have nothing to do with me; they have a life of their own. A lot of times I won’t know what a song is about when I’m writing it. It just has a certain feeling about it.”
Isakov has played numerous music festivals and venues across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When he is not on the road or writing, he is usually in his garden. A degree in horticulture might seem contradictory to a life spent in motion, but Isakov finds balance in the quiet concentration of the work, creating roots that keep him connected to home.
His new album, The Weatherman, was recorded mostly in solitude outside the quiet mountain town of Nederland, Colorado over the course of a year and a half. “I wanted to make something that felt genuine. We recorded everything with analogue gear and mixed it on tape, which gives the songs a raw and vulnerable feeling.”

3 Mustaphas 3 - Friends, Fiends & Fronds

3 Mustaphas 3 is a British World music band formed in 1982. Core members are Ben Mandelson (under the name Hijaz Mustapha), Tim Fienburgh (1954–2008) (under the name Niaveti III) Colin Bass (under the name Sabah Habas Mustapha), and Nigel Watson (under the name Houzam Mustapha), around which orbit many other Mustaphas – all supposed to be the nephews of Uncle Patrel Mustapha. They claim to originate from the Balkans, but play music from almost every continent; their slogan, "Forward in all directions!", is an expression of this musical diversity. Active at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, they have now stopped producing and performing together, but haven't officially disbanded. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Mustaphas_3

Friends, Fiends & Fronds

A collection of mostly singles (both "A" and "B" sides) and remixes, Friends, Fiends and Fronds is yet another example of 3 Mustaphas 3's unpredictable and risk-taking nature. A generous dose of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean styles can be found, and true to form, the group successfully incorporates everything from Afro-Cuban salsa to Scottish/Celtic music. Some of the material, although enjoyable, isn't essential, and in general, this CD isn't in a class with Heart of Uncle or Soup of the Century. Nonetheless, there's a lot to admire here -- including "Linda Linda" (which brings together Afro-Cuban and Middle Eastern elements) and the Greek-oriented "Anapse to Cigaro." This is a CD that can make you think you're in Ankara one minute and Havana the next.

Brian Finnegan - The Ravishing Genius Of Bones [Irlanda]

The Ravishin Genius of Bones.

Ed Boyd y John Joe Kelly, la banda Crocked Still, Damien O’Kane o Aidan O’Rourke.
The ravishing genius of bones es un disco realizado con mucho mimo, y desde luego que por momentos (Starrs) parece realizado a capricho.

T with the Maggies - T with the Maggies (2010) [Irlanda]

T with the Maggies are Tríona & Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh & Moya Brennan

In May 2007, a remarkable gathering of traditional Irish musicians and singers came together at Vicar Street in Dublin to celebrate the life and music of Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, who, with Skara Brae and The Bothy Band, had been a pioneering force in Irish music.

Among the many artists and groups coming together that evening was an evocative performance by four of Ireland’s finest female singers. Tríona and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill (Míchaél’s two sisters, concert organisers and co-members of Skara Brae and The Bothy Band) were joined by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan and Moya Brennan of Clannad.

And so was born one of the most inspirational and heartening collaborations in traditional Irish music.

Tríona, Maighread, Mairéad and Moya, T with the Maggies, all come from the same corner of County Donegal (with Gaelic as their first language) and all have illustrious career histories. Each individual brings a unique and varied interpretation of their musical heritage but the result is one of the finest ever amalgamations of Irish female voices. They are real Celtic women!

Their first show in January 2009, at the Temple Bar Tradfest in Dublin, sold out immediately and they went on to perform at last year’s Irish Global Economic summit. A new recording of their repertoire favourite, Two Sisters, was commissioned by Sam Shepard, for his play, ‘Ages of the Moon’.

On the stage the ‘Maggies bubble with a mixture of instinctive tone, harmony and a generous helping of laughs. Each bring their choice of songs but mould them into the group with a unique soundscape of voice, piano, fiddle and harp. You can tell that they are the best of friends.

T with the Maggies is the group’s first album, combining over four decades of musical experience. With subtle arrangements, the album brings to the fore four voices that have shaped Irish traditional, folk and celtic music today.
